The use of AI to refer to an ever-expanding collection of algorithmic methods and technologies has become a recurrent problem when discussing AI, particularly when attempting to critique its applications. Therefore, I begin with a grounded description of AI to support readers throughout the remainder of the text. I then give readers a taxonomy for categorizing different AI projects so that they can more clearly understand what kinds of technologies are being discussed and what kinds of promises are being made. We begin with a discussion of AI in popular culture, how it can be illustrative of an Ideology of Ability, and how these stories shape our ideas of what AI is or should be. I close the chapter with a discussion of how the promises of AI projects rely on metaeugenic beliefs—the AI project is dependent upon our collective fear and loathing of disability in order to sell us promises that the object of our fear can be eliminated through technological “progress.”
