Ventricular septal defect closure is important for patients with congenital heart disease, as it occurs in association with many cardiac anomalies. Although common complications can occur and result in postoperative arrhythmias, heart block, residual ventricular septal defect, infection, and injury to the aortic, tricuspid, or pulmonary valves. Various forms of closure techniques, choice of patch material, and type of suture technique can impact resultant complications. Possible complications are noted herein, with intentions to avoid injury to anatomic structures and prevent complications while achieving successful and uncomplicated closure.
