This final chapter draws together the systematic arguments and historical readings of the study to reflect on the cultural metaphor of invisibility and the history of the subject. It summarises the evolution of invisible characters since the eighteenth century, and concludes with a discussion of literature as a third sphere that allows for transcending the opposition between social and hegemonic invisibility in moments of liminal invisibility.
