Exploring Digital Escape Room Games as Training Environments for Collaborative Problem-Solving Skills in Engineering Education

In an increasingly complex and fast-paced world, individuals must develop versatile competencies and skills to address contemporary challenges. In this chapter, we propose digital escape rooms and puzzles offer opportunities to enhance student engagement, problem-solving and collaborative learning to drive social change. This is explored through two separate case studies. The first explores the perspective of the gameplay situation itself with a focus on interaction, examining the university students’ approach to collaborative puzzle solving in a digital escape room game through qualitative analysis of recordings of gameplay sessions. The second considers the design of digital escape rooms and explores how design may impact collaborative problem-solving skills development, through a small-scale qualitative analysis using educator developed artefacts and semi-structured interviews. Both sets of findings are then combined to offer preliminary insights into potential implementation in engineering education. Results from the first case study suggests off-the-shelf digital escape room games are suitable for practicing non-subject-specific problem-solving skills, particularly explorative skills. The second case study echoes this, finding digital escape rooms support solution finding, creative critical thinking, iterating and learning from success and failure while fostering a sense of agency, confidence and independence. Throughout the chapter, we offer perspectives on digital escape rooms demonstrating their transformative potential to support collaborative problem-solving skills development in engineering education.
