What Is Compliance Management? A Proposed Definition and Classification Informed by Organizational Theory

For several years now, compliance management has been one of the boom topics in management discourse. This is not just another buzzword that everyone who wants to appear competent needs to know; the term may be used in purely rhetorical ways, too. However, compliance management gains its importance—and risk—precisely where it is not merely paying lip service, but where organizational structures are also being redesigned in accordance with its principles. This happens above all in corporate contexts, especially in the financial and pharmaceutical sectors. However, compliance management is also gaining prominence in other types of organizations, whether in hospitals, public administrations or even non-profit organizations (Silverman 2008).
