Societal Values, Structures, and Institutions, and Their Impact on Health System Design
摘要
How societal values, structures, and institutions influence the design of the health system is ‘a reflection of the society’s political, social, economic, and cultural history’. We introduce the different types of health systems (Sect. 3.2) and discuss how the broader welfare systems are related to health systems (Sect. 3.3). The welfare system of a country provides protection of its citizens against loss of work and income, provides in the needs for affordable housing and so on. As such it has an important influence on the social determinants of health and inequalities in health. However, the extent of the protection afforded by the welfare system differs between countries (Sect. 3.3). We describe the core characteristics of health systems in Sect. 3.4 and end this chapter with (implicit) priorities in health systems (Sect. 3.5).
