Arcade Games Generating an Atmosphere to Promote Exercise
摘要
Physical inactivity has emerged as a critical social concern in recent years. Despite the integration of exercise elements with gamification in various platforms following the proliferation of video games and handheld devices, this issue persists unresolved. This study addresses a significant gap in existing exergames: the insufficient incorporation of cooperative and competitive elements that foster camaraderie and healthy rivalry among players. We propose arcade-style gaming platforms as an effective solution, hypothesizing that their physical design and social setting naturally create an environment conducive to interpersonal connection and physical engagement. The proposed arcade game demonstrated that it elicited significantly stronger competitive motivation compared to equivalent handheld and console video games. Furthermore, the cooperative dimension became notably more pronounced in multi-player scenarios. These results show arcade games create environments that foster group awareness. Users appreciated unique arcade elements like cabinet design and the social aspect of watching others play, indicating these platforms could effectively encourage physical activity.
