Physics Virtual Classroom: Leveraging Virtual Reality Sandboxes for Learning Classical Mechanics

Visualizations such as motion, and free-body diagrams accompany problems and scenarios in classical mechanics for a physics class. However, textbooks present such diagrams with fixed viewpoints and sparse information. In this paper, we describe the design of our virtual reality (VR) experience that transforms these diagrams into interactive, customizable, and dynamic components that learners can inspect and engage in a 3D immersive environment. We highlight their use in three scenarios: freefall, horizontal, and parabolic motions. As sandbox-type experiences, we allow users to inspect these environments freely as the motion diagrams are visualized. Then, to mimic a real-world experiment of observable phenomena, we designated buttons for dependent variable changes like height, initial angle, and velocity. As an ending assessment, we showed an equation fill-in-the-blanks canvas interface to check the learners’ understanding of the relationships among the variables. We also include insights from the development process and future work towards a user study.
