Vection, a self-motion sensation induced by visual information, has been applied in entertainment and navigation to enhance immersion. While inducing vection can be beneficial in some contexts, there are also cases where canceling unintended vection (e.g., motion sickness) is desirable. To address both needs, we propose a wearable device capable of both inducing and suppressing vection through controlled visual stimulation. We designed and implemented a device called Vectrigger, which induces vection using LEDs arranged three-dimensionally around the user’s field of view. By sequentially flashing these LEDs, the device creates a flowing visual effect that triggers vection, while still allowing the user to see the real world directly. We conducted evaluation experiments to compare the vection-inducing and vection-overlapping effects of Vectrigger with those of a head-mounted display (HMD). The experimental results confirmed that vection can be induced with the proposed method. Furthermore, in specific cases, certain combinations of vection stimuli were able to cancel out the sensation of vection.
