Shared decision-making (SDM) has immense potential to contribute to person-centered claudication care, including avoidance of over- or under-treatment and setting clear goals or expectations. This chapter is intended to introduce the basic elements of SDM to clinicians who treat patients with intermittent claudication due to peripheral artery disease. We will review the definition of SDM and associated terminology, approaches to practicing and measuring SDM, and specific considerations related to claudication. An overview of evidence and evidence gaps related to SDM for claudication is also provided as a framework for considering the challenges that must be navigated for integration into both research and clinical practice.
