The focus of this chapter is on how GenAI can support research design. This is approached from two angles. First, research design entails the creation of discrete research projects, including different phases, notably the formulation of research questions or hypotheses and choosing the right methodologies. The chapter explores how GenAI can facilitate each of these phases, with the aim of developing strong research proposals, articles, or other output types. It begins by illustrating how AI modelsAI models can assist researchers in formulating research questions and hypotheses. This process typically involves analysing vast amounts of existing literature to identify gaps and emerging trends and to choose appropriate methodologies within and across disciplines. The chapter makes the case and shows how the entire enterprise can be made easier with contemporary AI toolsAI tools. Second, research design could simply refer to the paradigm that a researcher adopts, including the theoretical or philosophical approach applied to the research questions. The chapter explores the application of AI tools to the process of scanning and understanding alternative approaches, before deciding which to use. In covering these issues, the chapter will reflect on potential pitfalls, notably the importance of maintaining human oversighthuman oversight to ensure that research design respects ethical standards and scientific integrity.
