This chapter explores the fundamental arguments for and against the role of AI in research, exploring both its transformative potential and its inherent risks. On one hand, AI represents a profound shift in knowledge productionKnowledge production, offering new and faster ways to process, analyse, and generate information. This disruptive technology challenges the traditional notions of human creativity, autonomy, and agency in the research process. If AI becomes central, does it diminish the intellectual rigour and human intuition that have historically driven scientific progress? On the other hand, AI also embodies intellectual optimism, expanding the frontiers of knowledge by enabling new methodologies and accelerating discovery. However, there is an inherent risk that reliance on AI might lead to overconfidence in its outputs, particularly when those outputs are marred by biases or inaccuracies. This chapter interrogates whether AI can truly serve as a neutral tool for innovationInnovation or if it portends the risk of undermining the integrity and ethical foundations of scholarly inquiry.
