Unraveling Cellulase Complexes: Innovations and Applications
摘要
Cellulase enzymes play a critical role in the hydrolysis of cellulose, the primary structural component of plant biomass, into fermentable sugars. Their versatility has made them indispensable across industries such as biofuel production, textiles, paper and pulp, food and beverages, and waste management. This chapter offers a comprehensive exploration of cellulase enzymes, detailing their classifications, sources, and mechanisms of action. It examines production and purification strategies, from conventional methods to advanced techniques involving genetic engineering and fermentation. The chapter also highlights the extensive applications of cellulases, particularly in biofuel production, while addressing challenges such as industrial stability, substrate specificity, and cost-effective production. Recent innovations, including advancements in genetic and protein engineering, metagenomic approaches, and synthetic biology, are discussed as promising solutions to enhance cellulase efficiency, stability, and affordability. By providing an in-depth analysis of the current developments and challenges in cellulase research, this chapter seeks to inspire future innovations and broaden the potential of cellulases across various industrial applications.
