New Technologies: Patents and Innovation in Enzyme Development Applied to Biofuels
摘要
The market value for biofuels was estimated as USD 141.00 billion in 2025, and it is projected to surpass USD 257.61 billion by 2034. Enzyme technologies play a crucial role in the development and improvement of biofuel production processes within this growing market, either as effective saccharification agents applied prior to fermentation, or as catalysts used in various steps of organic synthesis. This chapter describes the latest technological advancements in the field of enzymes for biofuel applications. A patent search was carried out in the Derwent Innovations Index Database, combining keywords and International Patent Classification (IPC) codes to retrieve patent documents related to the application of enzymes in the production of bioethanol, biodiesel, biomethane, biohydrogen, and biobutanol. Relevant patent trends and recent technological innovations were described to highlight the key role of enzymes in the saccharification of substrates for bioethanol fermentation, in the enzymatic (trans)esterification of biodiesel, in the biological synthesis of biomethane and biohydrogen, and in the synthesis of biobutanol.
