The sociopolitical function of mainstream psychotherapies has conventionally been to shore up the Western individual as a functional unit of capitalist societies. In this chapter, we offer a historical and political analysis of the capitalist psychotherapeutic construction of selfhood, as well as inquire into the process of how this construction takes place. We deploy the work of philosopher Michel Foucault to assist in this analysis. Turning to viable therapeutic alternatives, we discuss the Critical-Liberation Psychotherapy (CLP) model, which aims to address many of the capitalist status quo-supporting shortcomings of existing therapeutic modalities. We briefly put forward three elements of CLP that relate to the overall project of the chapter: (1) clinical formulation within CLP; (2) the function of psychotherapy from a CLP lens; and (3) some in-session CLP practices to illustrate its alternative potential for a radical anti-capitalist therapy model.
