Caregiving for the elderly is considered multidimensional, complex, demanding and often extended throughout the recipient’s life. In this qualitative phenomenological study, we used snowball sampling to interview 14 caregivers and document their caregiving experiences in Guyana. We examined the multiple roles of caregivers to older adults and the social, psychological, emotional, physical and economic impact, especially those of us who spend long hours caring for the terminally ill and bedridden care recipients. The study found that caregiving restricted and altered caregivers’ lives, resulting in financial sacrifices and constraints, and emotional, traumatic and stressful experiences. However, caregivers also experienced relief and satisfaction towards the end of life of the recipient. Social support from family members, in particular, helped to cushion the level of impact. Mental healthcare services, psychological counselling or therapy and respite care services and developing a schedule for self-care are recommended as mechanisms to help caregivers cope with the emotional demands of caring.
