Building on the themes of migration and cultural displacement, this chapter shifts focus to Sunjeev Sahota’s The Year of the Runaways. Using Judith Butler’s concepts of precariousness and precarity, the chapter examines the experiences of Indian migrant workers in Northern England, where migration and labor intersect to shape identity formation. Sahota reimagines the relationship between the Global North and South, complicating traditional power dynamics that frame migrant identity. By analyzing how the protagonists define themselves in relation to both their origins and their host society, the chapter highlights the limitations of multicultural discourse when it continues to frame the other in opposition to dominant cultural norms. The precariousness of their existence critiques the neoliberal structures that often constrain migrant identities and economic survival.
