Beyond Concrete: Understanding the Essential Role of Soft Skills for Teacher Candidates
摘要
This chapter explores the interplay between hard and soft skills, drawing an analogy between a skyscraper’s physical structure and functional spaces. While hard skills, such as technical proficiency and certifications, form the foundation of professional competence, soft skills, including communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, are equally crucial for success. We argue that often-overlooked soft skills are pivotal in teacher candidates’ personal and professional development. Our chapter will take a qualitative thematic analysis approach, identifying the nature of skills to learning theories. By applying adult learning theories, such as Malcolm Knowles’ principles, we aim to provide strategies for cultivating these essential skills in teacher candidates. Further, our chapter uses the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) to understand the stages of behavior change and its application to skill development. We view our teacher candidates as project managers and know they will be expected to be mentors and facilitators in their practice. By recognizing the importance of hard and soft skills, we can empower teacher candidates to become well-rounded educators equipped to inspire and guide their students. The chapter concludes with practical recommendations for mentoring and coaching teacher candidates, leveraging techniques like the GROWTH model. By fostering a holistic approach to skill development, we can create a new generation of educators who are knowledgeable and skilled in interpersonal communication, critical thinking, and adaptability.
