Introduction: The Contemporary Middle Ages
摘要
This chapter serves as an introduction for the whole monograph. It introduces the study of medieval-themed video games through the lens of Cultural and Medievalism Studies, and it presents how the three main games analysed, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, God of War, and Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, appropriate and adapt the Germanic legendary tradition. This chapter also highlights the transformation of medieval narratives into interactive digital formats via gamification and remediation, emphasizing their appeal in contemporary popular culture. It states the evolution of Medievalism as an academic field, its relationship with mass media, and the influence of Reception Theory and Postmodernism in shaping historical consciousness. The chapter argues that video games have evolved from entertainment products to tools that reflect and reshape societal values and perceptions of the Middle Ages, particularly within Western capitalist societies, and it also sets the stage for a deeper examination of how medieval tropes are reimagined to fit modern ideological and aesthetic frameworks.
