This editorial chapter introduces Volume 5 of the edited book series on crowd dynamics. Following the structure and style established in Volumes 1–4, it goes beyond a simple summary of the papers contained therein to provide a critical review of recent advances in the field and to outline directions for future research. The content unfolds in three parts: the first examines the complex nature of human crowds and identifies three key challenges; the second provides a concise overview of the chapters in this volume, linking each contribution to the broader theoretical framework; and the third reflects on future perspectives in light of the key issues discussed, with particular emphasis on emerging methodologies and cross-disciplinary applications.
