Lung cancer policy encompasses many levels—not just federal policy, but state and local as well as organizational policy. From federal law that impacts research funding allocation, to regulatory actions that control market access to new drugs and treatments, and state laws impacting licensure constraints, all the way down to payer-level policies that determine medical necessity of clinical services and health system policies that direct staffing levels, workflows and resource capacities, policy decisions shape the realities of a navigator’s daily work. In truth, policy decisions made by health systems or commercial payers can have as momentous an impact on a patient’s care pathway as federal legislation passed by Congress. Positioned on the frontline of clinical service delivery, lung cancer navigators have vital firsthand insights into the real-world impact on patient care of decisions made by policymakers at all levels. Navigators are therefore uniquely equipped to impact policy meaningfully in the lung cancer arena. This chapter examines policy across these multiple layers of decision-making, implementation, and impact. It also identifies opportunities for lung cancer navigators to participate in policy advocacy as a core function of their professional role.

摘要
