The Lake Ohrid basin is widely well recognized and it harbours a rich cultural and historical heritage of different historical periods and forms. The communities that surround Lake Ohrid are some of the oldest in Europe. At least six underwater locations that depict lakeshore villages spanning a very long time span (from the Neo-Eneolithic period to the present) have been located on the littoral areas of the lake. The most significant example of a tri-conch building in Albania is the early Christian church of Lin, which, with certain simplifications, replicates the model of the comparable construction in Ohrid (Lychnidos). It was most likely constructed at the start of the sixth century CE and remained in use until the Early Middle Ages, when it was dramatically destroyed. White, black, and red are the primary colors utilized in the mosaics that cover the church’s seven floors. Nevertheless, orange, yellow, green, and brown hues are also used. Lin mosaics, some of which are in excellent condition, are similar in style to the early medieval mosaics in Macedonia (basilicas in Ohrid, Radolisht, and Studencisht) located just across the lake. They feature biblical themes (Eucharistic), flowers, animals, svastica, and numerous other religious symbols. So, the traces of the first human communities appeared way back in the Palaeolithic period, while the recent archaeological founds imply on the first traces of spiritual life from the Neolithic period. The monumental heritage of the Middle Ages are also preserved, architectonically the most important and stylistically the most authentic. Under the influence of different political and social circumstances, the area of the Lake Ohrid becomes the place of interference of stylistic and architectonical headings. So, the wider area of the Albanian part of Lake Ohrid presents one of the most significant regions in developments of Albania. The historical background of those processes is explained in this chapter, which also looks back at the cultural artifacts and sacred and profane structures of past civilizations that contributed to the Lake Ohrid’s richness and diversity of cultural components.

摘要
