Shared by Greece, Albania and North Macedonia, the Transboundary Prespa Park is a protected area where the primary sector is the main source of income and lake water management in Prespa Lakes one of the most important issues. However, different levels of development between the three countries, exacerbated by the fact that Albania and North Macedonia are not EU member states, presents common water management with significant on-the-ground challenges. Cooperation between local communities, and their involvement in decision-making through participatory processes, emerges as a useful management tool, improving stakeholder awareness and information, promoting the assumption of personal responsibility and initiative, and leading towards the adoption of sustainable practices. For the purposes of the current study, 420 primary sector professionals from 19 park localities, spanning all 3 countries, were engaged in participatory processes, with the aim of assessing their behaviour and perceptions regarding the protection and management of area of residence. To process the results, the PCP method was developed, a tool for quantifying information drawn from questionnaires, based on selecting question segments and matching them to three axes of the participatory process: Participation, Cooperation and Preservation. Opinion analysis of the participants’ responses, highlighted their willingness to be involved in decision-making on local issues concerning the management of their area and to cooperate in order to contribute to the sustainable development of the Park. Apart from being used for evaluating results in future similar research, the PCP method could also be a useful tool for public agencies and entities involved in making participatory-based management decisions.
