This chapter focuses on Adolf Brand’s photographic series Rasse und Schönheit (Race and Beauty), which appeared as a supplement to the journal Der Eigene in 1926. The chapter argues that male same-sex desire becomes inseparable from male whiteness in Brand’s nude photographs. These images portray German youths as the descendants of the ancient Greeks and as representatives of a Nordic race. Indeed, Brand’s visual work documents a transition from a fascination with othered male bodies to a glorification of male whiteness with its concomitant attributes of beauty and purity. The photographer merged the Greek classical tradition with contemporary German thought on physical culture, naturism, and eugenics. His aesthetic language was informed by the racist ideology of the time, which combined völkisch, scientific, anthropological, and cultural elements.
