Well-Being by Design: Social Science for Healthier Lives
摘要
This chapter explores how behavioural and social sciences contribute to health and well-being, especially in workplace contexts. It introduces preventive health management, emphasising the importance of addressing chronic health risks and promoting positive psychological practices. Drawing on classical, operant, and observational learning principles, the authors show how behaviour is socially constructed and can be reshaped to enhance well-being. The chapter highlights the impact of environmental factors, leadership, and social support on workplace health. It also discusses biographical research, showcasing how individuals like Florence Nightingale and Bill Gates achieved well-being through strength, compensation, or purpose. Positive organisational well-being is examined through frameworks like the ASSET model and the Gallup Well-Being Index®, linking well-being to productivity, engagement, and reduced absenteeism. Ultimately, the chapter makes a strong case for integrating social science into health strategies to build healthier, more resilient individuals and organisations.
