Quantitative Risk Analysis of Hydrogen for Ship Bunkering Operations

This paper investigates safety during the bunkering of a ship with hydrogen. A quantitative risk assessment is conducted dedicated to the bunkering of hydrogen from a trailer located at port facilities. Hazard identification methods, such as the master logic diagram technique, are used to identify the initiating events that create a disturbance and have the potential to lead to hydrogen release during the bunkering operation. Corrosion in tanks, pipelines, and other parts, and excess external heat owing to nearby external fire are merely some of the identified initializing events. The frequency of the major accident scenarios is calculated by exploiting available failure rate data. Consequence assessment is performed in case of flammable hydrogen release, to estimate thermal radiation in case of a fire or overpressure and impulse in case of deflagration. Finally, risk is evaluated by combining the frequencies of the various accident scenarios with the corresponding consequences. The software HYRAM+ and SOCRATES are used for consequence assessment, which consider various bunkering scenarios.
