Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Interventions to Support Emergent Bilingual Students’ Language and Literacy
摘要
This chapter aims to support educators of emergent bilingual students (EBs) in designing and delivering culturally and linguistically responsive language and literacy interventions. Literacy interventions for EBs should prioritize oral language development. Language and literacy interventions and evidence-based practices used with EBs must be validated and proven effective for this population. The selection and implementation of interventions are best guided by a culturally and linguistically responsive multitiered system of supports framework for EBs that addresses students’ language proficiency levels at every tier of instruction and intervention. This chapter outlines key features of literacy skills and evidence-based practices for EBs, offers guidance on data-based decision-making to improve students’ academic achievement, and discusses considerations for making special education referrals. Additionally, reflection questions are provided to further engage readers.
