In a now-famous article, Hardin developed the foundational concept of the “tragedy of the commons”. Hardin thus shows that if individuals managing a common good prioritize their particular interest, it necessarily results in the destruction of the common good. This thesis applies without difficulty to the management of our common good: our planet. Various authors have challenged Hardin’s analysis. However, I show here that the characteristics of our societies only reinforce Hardin’s analysis. Unless we profoundly change our economic paradigm, we cannot avoid the tragedy of the commons.

摘要

In a now-famous article, Hardin developed the foundational concept of the “tragedy of the commons”. Hardin thus shows that if individuals managing a common good prioritize their particular interest, it necessarily results in the destruction of the common good. This thesis applies without difficulty to the management of our common good: our planet. Various authors have challenged Hardin’s analysis. However, I show here that the characteristics of our societies only reinforce Hardin’s analysis. Unless we profoundly change our economic paradigm, we cannot avoid the tragedy of the commons.
