This chapter explores Sentinel Reflexivity, an approach where researchers deliberately acknowledge and minimise their potential bias to reveal phenomena as accurately as possible. This strategy involves identifying preconceived ideas, assumptions, and biases that could distort findings, then setting these aside through systematic bracketing techniques. Key elements when implementing Sentinel Reflexivity include supervision, member checking with participants, triangulation of methods, peer debriefing, and transparent reporting of methodological decisions. Ways of practically engaging in Sentinel Reflexivity are explored across all research phases, from writing literature reviews, selecting participants, data collection and analysis, to manuscript writing. The chapter also addresses challenges in managing a dual researcher-therapist role, and working effectively within research teams. The approach frames trustworthiness as working to gain the reader’s trust in the findings’ close representation of the phenomenon. While acknowledging the inherent limitations of achieving complete objectivity, the chapter advocates for transparent, methodical approaches to minimising researcher influence in both qualitative and quantitative music therapy research.
