The Value of Reflexivity
摘要
Reflexivity is essential for all endeavours in music therapy. This chapter explores reflexivity within research processes, as researchers carefully examine their influence on their studies. The chapter distinguishes reflexivity from reflection, positioning it as a dynamic and continuing process that occurs before, during, and after research activities. Different approaches to reflexivity are grounded in ontological and epistemological understandings of the world and how we can get to know it. This chapter examines the foundations underlying different reflexive approaches, spanning objective, subjective, and intersubjective paradigms, while also considering emerging concepts of interobjectivity and the integration of artificial intelligence. Reflexivity is not exclusive to qualitative research, but is vital across all methodologies for meaningful knowledge creation. The chapter highlights the importance of reflexivity for ethical research relationships and scientific rigour. It is particularly relevant in contemporary contexts emphasising epistemic justice, advocacy for the profession, and responsible engagement with emerging technologies.
