The Pros and Cons of Using WhatsApp in Multilateral Diplomacy
摘要
In this chapter, the benefits and drawbacks of WhatsApp in diplomatic settings are critically analyzed. On the positive side, WhatsApp facilitates real-time coordination, enables rapid decision-making, and strengthens informal ties between delegates. It also reduces physical constraints and allows more flexible, asynchronous participation. Linguistically, it gives non-native speakers the opportunity to translate and formulate responses without time pressure. However, the chapter also points out major concerns: the lack of formality may lead to blurred boundaries between personal and official communication; the app poses risks related to data security, confidentiality, and accountability. Furthermore, there are concerns about unequal access and digital exclusion, especially for smaller or under-resourced missions. Cultural and linguistic misunderstandings may arise due to the informal tone and lack of non-verbal cues. This balanced discussion offers insights into the real implications of incorporating WhatsApp into global diplomacy.
