This chapter discusses Cotton Famine poetry in relation to the emotion of pride, which it reads largely in its positive sense as an emotional bulwark against political and economic pressures. The first section, “Labouring-Class and Regional Solidarity,” looks at how poetry functions to bolster labouring-class pride and solidarity during the Lancashire Cotton Famine, with a focus on industrial and civic achievement, often with a distinctly regional focus. The second section, “British Patriotism,” looks beyond the region and examines patriotic and nationalistic verse reacting to United States-United Kingdom antipathy and national relief efforts for Lancashire workers. The third section is entitled “American Patriotism,” but it focusses largely on American Union patriotic poetry, especially that comparing American democracy and republicanism to British monarchy and imperialism.
