Career-Oriented Pathways: Analyzing the Tendencies of Secondary Students Choosing TVET Programs for Higher Learning

In the year 2023, a significant proportion of secondary school graduates, precisely over 70 percent or 300,000 individuals, exhibit a lack of inclination towards pursuing higher education at the tertiary level especially in TVET. The potential consequences of the current situation on the future supply of skilled workers in the nation have raised concerns among stakeholders. According to the latest statistical data, the current workforce in the country comprises only 28 percent of skilled workers, which falls short of the desired threshold of 35 percent. One of the primary factors contributing to this situation is the presence of the gig economy, along with an increase in the cost of living and the availability of employment opportunities. This study examines students’ understanding and interest in selecting TVET as their preferred option for tertiary-level education. This research employs a survey as the primary data collection method, and the collected data is subsequently subjected to descriptive and correlation analysis. The study’s sample comprises secondary students in their final year in Putrajaya, Malaysia. The poll assessed students’ comprehension of TVET, their familiarity with TVET, their level of interest in TVET, and their preparedness to participate in TVET to determine their inclinations. Additionally, these elements has been subjected for correlation testing to see their relationship in the tendencies of student opt for TVET program for tertiary education. Based on the survey results, a significant majority of students, above 70%, have a thorough comprehension and awareness of the concept and nature of TVET. Additionally, more than 60% of respondents express desire and readiness to enrol in TVET programmes for their higher education. Correlation research reveals robust positive connections between the perception, interest, and awareness of TVET and the preparedness of students to select TVET as their higher education option. Greater preparedness to pursue TVET is correlated with stronger perception, interest, and awareness.
