This chapter addresses the political dimensions of liberal welfarism (LW), focusing on how freedom and welfare are contested, negotiated, and institutionalized within governance. The discussion begins by broadening the concept of paternalism, incorporating recent scholarly developments that shift the emphasis from autonomy alone to include rationality as a central concern. Within this expanded framework, the political implications of both the capability approach (CA) and libertarian paternalism (LP) are examined, highlighting how each contributes to ongoing debates about the legitimacy and scope of paternalistic interventions. Before turning to LW itself, the chapter introduces a more rigorous definition of paternalism, which serves as a benchmark for evaluating the framework. The analysis of LW’s political stance reveals its careful navigation between upholding individual freedoms—both negative and positive—and advancing wellbeing. It argues that these values are not inherently in conflict and can often be pursued simultaneously. In cases where trade-offs are unavoidable, LW advocates for an anti-lexicographic approach, rejecting rigid hierarchies between freedom and welfare. Throughout the chapter, it is demonstrated that liberal welfarism is fundamentally democratic, grounded in participatory processes and responsive to the pluralism of values in contemporary societies.
