In this introduction, the author explains how it came to be that she blended memoir with oral history and historical methods for this exploration of black Miami neighborhoods. The discussion is anchored by attention to the Baa Haas, or Bahas or Bajas, a little known black neighborhood in Miami Gardens, where her parents, enabled by the Fair Housing Act of 1968, purchased a house. She finds meaning in their ability to do so alongside other black historical actors who, despite their challenges, persist in their attempts to enhance the quality of their lives. What such persistence looks like with people of African descent in the country’s southernmost metropolis and a gateway to Caribbean and Latin America, centers the coming chapters.
