The Importance of Local Participatory Processes in Achieving Sustainable Changes: The Experience of Two Ecological Planning Workshops in Ariquemes, Rondônia
摘要
Participatory processes are of critical importance to scientists who wish to integrate local knowledge into research and to transfer the results and outcomes to a local level. Participatory processes also represent a well-established methodological tool for decision-making processes. They facilitate the collective reflection and action of diverse groups at the local level. This chapter will illustrate the scientific process of analysis, integration of local knowledge, and transfer of research results through the examination of two co-planning workshops held in Ariquemes in 2023 and 2024. This chapter will commence with an overview of the historical process of urban planning in Ariquemes, a modernist city in the Brazilian Amazon. It will then proceed to discuss the incorporation of an ecological contemporary approach to shift the modernist planning paradigm, an action that was made with local participatory workshops. This chapter will subsequently examine the post-workshop activities, during which the local knowledge integrated the research analysis. The conclusions of this process highlight the main findings, including the challenge of modernist planning, the transfer of research findings, and the new reflections about the specificities of the local scale, which were acquired by the researchers thanks to the local participatory workshops.
