The ECS is composed of receptors, endocannabinoids, and enzymes that synthesize and degrade the endocannabinoids once they have completed their tasks. The ECS is found within the female reproductive tract and regulates a range of functions, including the menstrual cycle and pregnancy. ECS dysfunction is found to be involved in many diseases. Cannabis sativa is a medicinal herb that has been used in many cultures for thousands of years. Constituents of cannabis interact with the ECS. It has over 2000 constituents, with key ones being the major phytocannabinoids cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), but there are many other phytocannabinoids, terpenes and terpenoids, and other therapeutically active constituents in the plant. Medicinal cannabis is not one thing. There are hundreds of cultivated varieties of cannabis, each with its own unique phytochemical profile that will contribute to its therapeutic actions. Similarly, there are thousands of medicinal cannabis products on the market. THC and CBD have a range of therapeutic actions that make cannabis a promising plant in the treatment of various medical conditions, including many that impact women. Although medicinal cannabis is relatively safe when used at correct dosages, cannabis, THC, and CBD do have side effects and may be contraindicated in some individuals.
