Sampling accompanied by documentation was the primary geological activity. Between major stations, traverse samples would be collected on the scale of tens to hundreds of meters. The two Apollo astronauts worked as a team in the field and interacted with the geology ‘backroom’ in near real time as well. Astronauts were trained to select a limited number of representative samples (rocks or regolith) and thus perform a built in ‘down select’ based on visual cues linking the surrounding landscape to only certain among all possible samples. Panoramic photographic documentation was provided at the very beginning of time spent at a station. Verbal and photographic descriptions were provided on the way to sampling sites. Site activities typically involved systematic sampling of soils with small rock fragments around and under a boulder as well as using the hammer to obtain chips of the boulder or collecting larger rocks below that apparently originated from it. Shovels and scoops typically sampled soils with existing small rock fragments, rakes captured fragments on the order of 1 mm or greater, and larger fragments were gathered by tongs, by hand, or were chipped off of a boulder with a hammer. Two types of core tubes were used to collect profiles of the regolith. The amount of time devoted to each sample was typically on the order of 2–3 min (except in cases of the deep drill cores). Collecting the deep drill cores took considerably more effort.
