Digitalization, Sustainability and Green Banking: A Case Study of Turkey
摘要
Climate change issues necessitate adaptation for environmental sustainability across all sectors. The banking sector also plays a crucial role in ensuring sustainability and reducing environmental risks by engaging in environmentally friendly activities. The provision of green services, products, and strategies by banks, and the continuation of their activities in line with sustainable development policies, is referred to as green banking. On one hand, government regulations on environmental sustainability, and on the other, practices driven by social awareness, are encouraging banks to become more environmentally conscious. The acceleration of digitalization further supports the greening of the banking sector. Online services, mobile banking applications, paperless processes, and ATMs significantly contribute to this transformation within the banking system. Green banking in Türkiye has been advancing through both institutional initiatives and government regulations. The initiatives implemented to promote sustainable banking in Türkiye encourage banks to adopt and expand their green banking strategies. In particular, digital banking practices such as e-banking, mobile banking services, and paperless transaction systems make a significant contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This study examines the relationship between digitalization, sustainability, and green banking in Türkiye. The main aim of the study is to analyze the impact of green banking practices on environmental sustainability and the role of digitalization in the implementation of these practices. In this context, several banks from Türkiye were selected as case examples, and the relationship between their green finance instruments, green banking activities, and the 2030 SDGs was evaluated.
