This chapter focuses on the cognitive-behavioral clinician’s implicit bias and its impact on Black American clients. Implicit bias is defined and the structural origins of implicit bias are described. The implications of implicit anti-Black racial bias on medical, mental health, and cognitive-behavioral therapy are discussed. Implicit bias is considered from the perspectives of White and Black cognitive-behavioral clinicians working with Black clients. The influence of implicit racial bias on cognitive-behavioral case conceptualization, clinician communications, clinical writings, diagnostic, and treatment plan decisions regarding Black Americans is explicated. The implicit association test is described and identified as one tool which could be used to measure implicit anti-Black racial bias. Methods to decrease implicit bias in cognitive-behavioral core tasks are explained. Macro, supervision, and training-oriented interventions to address implicit racial bias are also discussed.
