The first chapter begins with providing an overview of the distinguishing features of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Cognitive-behavioral theory, models, and interventions are discussed. Next, CBT’s relationship with Black Americans is explored from the perspectives of Black stakeholders, clients, and clinicians who provide CBT to Black Americans. Clinical qualitative and quantitative research on CBT with Black Americans is summarized. The extant systematic review and meta-analytic CBT research suggest CBT has promise for Black Americans experiencing various types of psychiatric disorders. However, some of the research is limited in its generalizability by its inclusion of participants that are not Black. This summary of clinical research is used to demonstrate CBT’s growth in Black America and the crucial cognitive-behavioral tools and dogma which are still needed to advance CBT with Black Americans. Appendix A provides the reader with a summary of clinical trials and reviews evaluating CBT with Black individuals. A foundation for cognitive-behavioral principles, specific to Black Americans, is provided in the first chapter.
