We have mentioned Galois’ name in the context of the development of group theory, but his contributions to the theory of equations were so profound that the theory that now underpins this branch of mathematics bears his name. He also led a rather interesting, albeit, tragically brief life and so it seems appropriate to say a few words about him here.
