The quadratic formula is a wonderful thing. When learning algebra for the first time, after observing some neat ways to solve specific quadratic equations (using factorisation or completing the square, for example) along comes an expression that allows you to solve any quadratic equation simply by plugging the coefficients in the quadratic into a formula.
