The use of granular data and new statistical methods has led to new insights into the short-term and long-term effects of colonial connections. This chapter places South and Southeast Asia and the Middle East in the context of the Great Divergence debate. It explores the role of trade and the changes in factor markets arising from colonial interventions and its implications for economic development. It asks if modernization led to industrial development and structural change.
