The clothing textile sector’s global value chain (GVC) is highly diversified and extensive, spanning from design to consumption. This chapter analyzes the relationships between production centers and the final distribution phase within the clothing industry’s supply chain. The study focused on the commercial urban center of Terrassa, a medium-sized city in the Barcelona metropolitan area crucial to industrial development. We examined the dichotomies between GVCs and global production networks (GPNs) and used a methodology employing descriptive and inferential statistics combined with field research. The results identify five types of clothing stores in Terrassa, categorized by their positioning within global, regional, and local values: global chains; local or regional chains; franchises; independent multibrand stores; and exclusive, independent single-brand or multibrand stores. We conclude that geographical diversification of production and integration into local cooperation and knowledge networks are key to sustainability and innovation in modern value chains. In addition, we highlight the transition towards circularity and sustainability within the regional textile cluster, with regional and European initiatives that promote social and environmental responsibility that are increasingly reflected in retail practices.

摘要
