Imagining Multispecies Communities: AI-driven Artistic Exploration of the More-than-Human Interdependences
摘要
This chapter examines how AI-driven postdigital arts can support ecological awareness and inspire cultural shifts toward greater responsibility within the more-than-human world. While scientific knowledge about human-caused environmental crises has grown, cultural transformations toward more sustainable ways of life in postindustrial societies remain essential. Artistic practices offer potent means to cultivate empathy and care beyond human-centric perspectives. This artistic research, culminating in the video art piece The End of a Story, demonstrates how ecological knowledge and human creativity, combined with AI’s generative capabilities, can provoke critical reflections on anthropocentrism by visualizing vital interdependencies within multispecies communities. Postdigital research, which dissolves boundaries between the digital and physical, human and more-than-human, framed this creative exploration. In this process, AI acted as a collaborator rather than a tool, expanding the artist’s vision through uncanny and awe-inspiring experiences. By disrupting traditional representations, AI-generated art provokes critical thinking about humanity’s role within ecological systems. At the same time, this research acknowledges AI technologies’ ethical and environmental challenges. From the artist’s perspective, the chapter demonstrates the potential of AI-driven art to inspire transformative thinking and contribute to sustainable, inclusive, and regenerative futures. Future studies will explore whether and how AI art can cultivate ecological awareness in diverse audiences.
