In this chapter, I critically review Cameroon’s legal framework on access to justice in environmental matters to determine its potential in spurring environmental protection. I argue that despite the explicit provision of the right, institutional, legal, and social challenges prevent Cameroonians from exercising their rights to access to ‘environmental’ matters. I conclude that the government of Cameroon needs to ensure that people’s access to justice in environmental issues is respected, protected, and exercised in a way that gives meaning to the enjoyment of their constitutional right to a healthy environment.

摘要

In this chapter, I critically review Cameroon’s legal framework on access to justice in environmental matters to determine its potential in spurring environmental protection. I argue that despite the explicit provision of the right, institutional, legal, and social challenges prevent Cameroonians from exercising their rights to access to ‘environmental’ matters. I conclude that the government of Cameroon needs to ensure that people’s access to justice in environmental issues is respected, protected, and exercised in a way that gives meaning to the enjoyment of their constitutional right to a healthy environment.
