Biodiversity of Algicolous Fungi Related with Macroalgae (Seaweeds)

The field of fungal taxonomy has witnessed significant advancements in recent years, largely driven by the integration of molecular tools with traditional morphological analysis. The fungal kingdom is remarkably diverse, with an estimated 1.5 million species, though only 11% have been formally documented in scientific literature. Among these, marine-derivative fungi have emerged as a pivotal group in drug discovery due to their ability to produce structurally unique secondary metabolites. Many of these compounds demonstrate promising biological and pharmacological activities, offering potential solutions for various human and plant diseases. Marine fungi from the habitats around Prince Edward Island (PEI) represent a largely unexplored reservoir for novel species and pharmacologically active substances. While marine-derived fungi, especially mushrooms, are highly regarded for their pharmaceutical and agrochemical applications, algal-associated fungi remain underexplored in regions like the Asia-Pacific, particularly in the Philippines. This is surprising, given the country’s abundant and diverse macroalgal flora. Endophytic fungi, microbial symbionts residing within plant tissues without inducing symptoms, are known to colonize almost all plant species, often in association with multiple endophyte partners within a single host. Macroalgal internal tissues present a yet-untapped ecological niche for marine fungi, holding vast potential for scientific exploration and discovery.
