La Médiation de l’Assurance (LMA) [the French Ombudsman Service] was created by the industry on 1 September 2015, at the same time as insurers joined forces to form a unified Federation. LMA resulted from the merger of the previous mediation schemes offered by the Fédération Française des Sociétés d'Assurances (FFSA)—which primarily comprised insurers incorporated as limited companies, whether listed on the stock exchange or not, and the Groupement des Entreprises Mutuelles d’Assurance (GEMA), which brought together mutual insurers. It is an association comprising all insurers governed by the French Insurance Code. Association members include public limited companies (such as AXA, Allianz and Generali), mutual insurers (such as Covea, Groupama and Macif) and insurance subsidiaries of banking groups (such as Cardif, a subsidiary of BNP Paribas, Assurances du Crédit Mutuel and Crédit Agricole Assurances). Brokerage associations are also members.
