Moushumi Bhowmik is a practitioner, researcher, and archivist of songs and sounds of “Bengal,” traveling for decades mainly through India, Bangladesh, and where the Bengali diaspora lives, including London. She also works in archives of sound. Physically, Bengal’s geography is vast and varied, and its ecology is unstable. Sonically, it is made of many languages, songs, and stories. In this self-reflexive essay, Bhowmik writes about the sonic worlds that form the bhuban or universe of her work and the many possibilities of listening to them. This bhuban holds both the global and the elsewhere in its fold. How does one learn to listen to this bhuban? Through a process of slow listening, and by listening with humility and empathy, allowing for failed listening and by learning from our failures.
